The song was written coming out of a depressive phase.
The idea of absolution, the medieval custom of buying a letter of indulgence that absolved you of your sins (or rather, cleared your conscience, giving you peace of mind) represents a short-term solution to your problems, a distraction or drug numbing your mind.
The real absolution, however, comes from working through it, such as by making music (“give your body to the disembodied”), and with it heal your own sadness and that of others (“chant to the disenchanted”).
There is no such thing as sad music, because music automatically lifts your spirits.
